One Engineer’s Quest to Cut Medical Radiation in Half

When we think about life-saving medical care, we often imagine skilled surgeons, advanced technology, and high-tech operating rooms. But inside every surgical suite, there is an invisible, silent workhorse operating in the background: the C-Arm X-ray system.

While C-Arm devices provide essential real-time imaging during complex procedures, they also present an unavoidable challenge—invisible, cumulative radiation exposure. Day after day, surgeons and nurses work alongside these machines, absorbing doses of direct beams and scattered radiation that quietly accumulate over a career.




A Question Born in the Operating Room

Before founding MSLINEENG, Biomedical Engineer Jae-Sang Ham spent over a decade working directly in hospital environments alongside mobile X-ray equipment.

During those years, he repeatedly witnessed a troubling reality. In fast-paced, high-pressure operating rooms, medical personnel could not always wear heavy lead aprons comfortably or cover every part of their bodies. Over time, low-dose scattered radiation poses genuine long-term health risks to the very people dedicated to saving lives.

Seeing this firsthand led to a single, persistent question: "Can we protect medical staff and patients at the source, without disrupting the surgical workflow?"


The Breakthrough with KICET

Driven by this mission, Ham set out to find a solution that wouldn't just block radiation, but optimize it.

Blocking X-rays is simple—heavy metals like lead do it easily. The real challenge, however, was doing so without degrading X-ray image contrast. If an image becomes blurry, a surgeon cannot diagnose or operate accurately.

To solve this dilemma, MSLINEENG partnered with the Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering & Technology (KICET) on a specialized R&D initiative. Together, they developed a proprietary composite ceramic material formulation designed to filter out useless, high-exposure soft X-rays and scattered radiation while allowing vital diagnostic imaging rays to pass through clearly.

The result was the CVP-2 Radiation Reduction Filter—a smart, compact filter attached directly to the X-ray tube housing. Armed with this technology and a mission to transform medical safety, MSLINEENG Co., Ltd. was officially established in 2011.


Protecting Healthcare Workers Worldwide

Introducing a new safety innovation into established medical workflows required rigorous, objective proof.

Clinical studies conducted in collaboration with researchers at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital demonstrated significant radiation reduction without loss of image contrast—findings later published in the peer-reviewed SCI journal, Journal of Radiological Protection.

With global certifications including FDA registration, CE mark, KFDA approval, and ISO standards, CVP-2 filters quickly expanded beyond local clinics. Today, MSLINEENG’s filters are installed in operating rooms and pain management centers across over 12 countries, actively lowering daily exposure levels for healthcare teams.
